A New Resort Community in the Dominican Republic Offers Residents and Guests an “Eco-Chic” Retreat
In the past, the Dominican Republic has been known as a collection of all-inclusive resorts, spring break packages, and mega developments. While areas such as Punta Cana have become over-run by tourists and high-rise condos, a tranquil ‘untapped’ retreat on the North coast is quickly being discovered by those seeking something new and unique.

Las Terrenas has long served as a hotspot for worldwide travelers and foodies “in the know”. The area is a cultural melting pot with international influences found in the cuisine, nightlife and numerous activities and excursions – there’s literally something for everyone here. This picturesque village has an abundance of delectable waterfront restaurants, quaint cafés, picturesque boutiques and more. A balmy climate and warm breezes make for perfect exploration of the region and a bevy of outdoor adventures such as 4-wheeling and horseback riding, water sports like snorkeling, diving, windsurfing and kite surfing and landmark treasures including Haitises National Park and the Salto Del Limon waterfalls, often referred to as a “mini Victoria Falls”.
Hidden in the lush hills of the Samana Peninsula, just outside Las Terrenas, Terrazas de Coson is a $180 Million dollar luxury resort community spread across 370 acres, complete with 72 luxurious residential villas and a 56-bungalow hotel. With its own heliport, Terrazas de Coson is easily accessible while maintaining a luxurious level of privacy. Conveniently located near six airports, the community is only a 15 minute ride from the new El Catey International Airport. The recently finished highway from Santo Domingo to Las Terrenas has shortened the drive from 5 hours down to a leisurely 1 ½ hour drive. Situated off of the new tourist boulevard that the tourism ministry has put in place, Terrazas de Coson is truly set in a prime location.

Designed to offer an elite crowd the ultimate retreat, Terrazas de Coson is the vision of a Swiss businessman whose mission was to provide residents and guests a haven where they could live as one with nature. The “Eco-Chic” lifestyle at Terrazas de Coson focuses on enjoyment and preservation of natural beauty, while
offering a high level of comfort, style and luxury. The villa estates soar 200 meters above the Atlantic Ocean, providing residents the utmost in privacy while they take pleasure in spectacular views of
Coson Beach, the Atlantic Ocean and beyond. Varying degrees of elevation enable the villas to enjoy breathtaking views from every angle of these extraordinary homes.
The villas and hotel are made of natural materials like wood, stone, glass and garden tiled roofs so that they flow effortlessly into the surrounding terrain. Eric Lhardit, CEO of Terrazas de Coson explains “We wanted to create homes that almost vanished into the environment, because many times vacationers want to do just that – disappear off the map. In Las Terrenas the beauty is so magnificent we want to practically hide the homes so as to not ruin the landscape. Instead we built the homes to seamlessly blend into their natural surroundings,” adds Lhardit.
The world renowned architecture firm GVA carefully studied the landscape before designing and positioning the homes, taking into consideration all the elements of this tropical location. They positioned the homes in a way to maximize the constant breeze from the Atlantic Ocean; as the wind flow lowers the humidity thereby lessening the community’s dependency on air conditioning. When the A/C is in use, the units can be
adapted to each room, as well as by time, making these homes ideal for those who only utilize their home parts of the year.
The community uses an extensive amount of renewable energy including solar and wind power, coming from sources such as the previously mentioned garden-tile roofs by eco-friendly construction specialists, Carlisle. Carlisle supports the “Building Green” concept with a key focus on promoting sustainable sites, protecting the atmosphere and conserving energy, materials and resources. Both aesthetically pleasing and functional, these green roofs will lessen the strain on the community infrastructure, reduce energy costs and water bills, and increase property value. Solar panels are found throughout the property, capturing energy from the sun and producing electricity which is then used in a variety of ways including outdoor lighting and sprinkler systems. Under the guidance of the Ministry of Tourism and Medio Ambiente, Terrazas de Coson has also developed their own completely eco-friendly treatment plant.
Starting at $1.7 Million, the villa homes are available in three common designs. No two homes will be exactly alike because each villa is designed and built around its particular setting. Sizes of the villas vary and range up to 11,190 square feet (1040 M²). The villa 1 model has been developed as three split levels, where as villa models 2 and 3 are split-level homes. The entire Terrazas de Coson community is gated and
secured, with the perimeter security hidden in the foliage of the hillside.
From inside to out; the homes are sleek and natural. Terraces and decks are made of cumaru and teak wood, roofs are organic and curved allowing for natural rain flow, and exterior gardens complement the surrounding plant life. Inside smooth surfaces of coral, pizarro and marble complement the natural stone, concrete and wood floors and walls. Homes are fully equipped with a washer and dryer, as well as gourmet kitchens that feature a stainless steel refrigerator, dishwasher, oven, and freezer. Tropical gardens and water flowing through and along each villa further creates the sense of being one with nature.
A tram-like railway gives access to Terrazas de Coson’s boutique hotel and resort, El Samana Hotel and Spa. The hotel consists of 28 bungalows with a total of 56 guest rooms. At El Samana Hotel and Spa, residents and guests can enjoy a state of the art spa, beach club, 5-star restaurant and casual restaurant run by award-winning French Chef Christophe Leroy. The son of Normandy dairy farmers, Christophe gained
invaluable experience as he worked his way through Europe’s greatest kitchens, working under legends like Alain Ducasse.

Fully embracing the Las Terrenas culture, Christophe is planning the cuisine around local flavors, where Spanish and French largely influence the dishes. Featured menu items will include sumptuous lobster paella with coconut milk, local fish grilled in a banana leaf served with mango chutney and an iced piña colada. The stylish beach club is equipped for relaxation with private cabanas and beds; a beachfront restaurant
allows residents and guests to enjoy delectable meals without ever having to leave the beautiful beaches of Coson. Other lavish amenities available to the community include a Victorian club house with tennis court and pool, an equestrian center, indoor and outdoor showers, glass wall infinity pools and plunge pools.
Due for completion in mid-2010, the first phase has sold out and Terrazas de Coson is in it’s 2nd phase that includes 60 different unique villas. For more information or to schedule a tour, contact 1.800.701.8414 or visit www.terrazasdecoson.com.
