Suncadia Lifestyle
July 15, 2009 by Fractional & Shared Ownership Property News & Reviews · 4 Comments
A world away from the city, yet close enough for a weekend getaway, Suncadia is a new all-season resort community located on 6,400 acres of forested land just 90 minutes east of Seattle on the sunny side of the Cascade Mountains.
Providing the quintessential Pacific Northwest experience, Suncadia offers a unique combination of luxury amenities and outdoor activities that has earned it the distinction of “Best New Pacific Northwest Resort” from Seattle Magazine and recognition from Travel + Leisure Golf and Robb Report Vacation Homes as one of the nation’s top resort communities. With 80 percent of the resort community designated as open space, including the central corridor surrounding the Cle Elum River, Suncadia is a forested retreat from city life offering all the luxury and comfort expected from a top resort.

The Cascade Mountains, stretching from Canada to northern California, create a rainshadow across the eastern foothills, which makes Suncadia one of the sunniest Pacific Northwest destinations. With an average of only nine inches of annual rainfall per year, residents and guests can enjoy the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest umbrella-free, while its mountain location ensures enough snowfall for traditional winter recreation activities such as cross-country skiing and snowshoeing throughout the forested property and ice-skating on the resort’s ice rink. As a recreational playground, Suncadia offers endless outdoor activities year-round, from hiking and biking along 50 miles of trails, to golfing on the resort’s two award-winning courses, to horseback riding and fly-fishing in the Cle Elum River that winds through the resort’s property.
Endless Possibilities
Ownership opportunities come in all shapes and sizes at Suncadia, ranging from single-family home sites and custom homes in the private Tumble Creek community, home to an award-winning Tom Doak-designed golf course, or in Suncadia centered around either of the two public golf courses: the Jacobsen-Hardy designed Rope Rider golf course (under construction) or the acclaimed Arnold Palmer-designed Prospector golf course, to condominium ownership at The Lodge at Suncadia, the first full-service resort
condominium lodge in the region.
Tumble Creek, located just across the river from Suncadia resort, is a private community featuring 600 home sites located on 2,600 acres of woodlands, meadows, streams and ponds, and was recently ranked by Travel + Leisure Golf magazine as one of “America’s Top 100 Golf Communities.” Tumble Creek golf course flows through towering pines, sun-drenched woodlands and meadows, and along the Cle Elum River bluff, creating an extraordinary golf experience. The par-71 plateau layout is 7,070 yards from the back tees and features some links-style holes, relatively small greens and is comparable to the courses in Scottsdale and the Coachella Valley.
Tumble Creek will also include a Bill Poss-designed Clubhouse available exclusively to Tumble Creek Club members and their guests. The Clubhouse will focus on sporting, wellness and social activities and features: a creative-in-residence studio for the arts and sciences; demonstration kitchen with cooking classes; kids’ attic. Already completed are the Golf House pro shop for golfers and the Hill House swim and fitness center with tennis, aerobics, yoga and personal development sessions. A director of outdoor pursuits is also available to arrange anything from tee times and guided fly fishing trips to day trips through Washington’s wine country.
Once complete, Tumble Creek is planned to include: Domerie Cabin, an intimate place to gather the family to tie a fly, wet a line, or party with friends; a stocked trout lake; Mount Baldy Outlook Pavilion perfect for family reunions or weddings; and Bullfrog Tent Camp where families can retreat to the woods for an outdoor adventure with everything pre-arranged by Tumble Creek staff from campfire stories to s’mores.
Across the river at Suncadia, created by the Palmer Course Design Company, Prospector is 18 holes of magnificent mountain golf, featuring dazzling views, rolling fairways and fast, medium sized greens. While extremely playable for all skill levels, Prospector’s well-bunkered fairways and numerous water features present plenty of risk/reward challenges for the more accomplished golfer. This spectacular, 7,100 yard championship golf course has been named one of the “Best New Public Courses” by Golf Digest magazine in addition to having been selected as one of the Top 50 new courses by Golf Week Magazine.
The Prospector Golf Shop, located inside The Inn at Suncadia, features clothing, equipment, and accessories for the whole family. Mulligan’s at the Turn, located on the Prospector’s 9th hole, serves sandwiches, snacks and beverages. Prospector offers a practice range, private instruction, junior golf, group instruction, and golf clinics for all ages and skills. Golfers may select a program or collaborate with PGA Teaching Professionals to customize a lesson program.
The Lodge at Suncadia, managed by Destination Hotels & Resorts (a sister company of the developer), is situated on one of the property’s most prominent and magnificent bluffs. Large windows throughout The Lodge overlook the Cle Elum River Valley and Tumble Creek, offering dramatic views of Mount Baldy, Domerie Peak and the Cascade Mountains. The gabled design is a contemporary adaptation of the West’s historic national park lodges, built from regional oak, pine and fir trees. The Lodge is part of Suncadia Village, where guests will be able to stroll to shops, boutiques and restaurants by way of the mountain glades and along the streams that envelop Suncadia’s Glade Spring Spa.

Lodge condominium ownership includes the opportunity for owners to place their condominiums in a rental arrangement program. The Lodge’s 254 guestrooms and suites available for ownership range from 449 square foot studios to spacious three-bedroom penthouses. The interior design reflects a quiet respect for the beauty and wonder of the pristine location, with a palette of finishes, furnishings and colors that are a sensitive and conscientious extension of the natural setting. Most condominiums feature flagstone tiling, a
gas fireplace, LCD televisions and high-speed internet access. Suites also feature spacious kitchens with stainless steel appliances, polished granite slab countertops and stacked washer and dryer. The luxurious aesthetic extends to the master baths with custom designed oak ceruse vanities, accent granite countertops, a deep soaking tub, custom wood-framed mirrors, stone tile flooring and decorative lighting and fixtures.
Owners at Suncadia experience first-rate service and full access to all amenities customary at any of Destination Hotels & Resorts’ premier resort establishments, including concierge service, valet parking, bell and reception services and business assistance. Portals, a 120-seat restaurant with panoramic mountain and river views, offers fresh, local artisan foods, and Fifty 6º, the adjoining lounge located off of The Lodge’s
Great Room, serves tasting plates and a diverse selection of local, handcrafted wines and microbrews.
The Lodge is adjacent to the full-service 9,900 square-foot Glade Spring Spa, Washington state’s only true all-season luxury destination spa. Glade Spring Spa offers indoor treatment rooms, including couples’ and wet rooms, co-ed and women’s sanctuaries, locker and steam rooms, a salon and retail. The Spa is nestled in a lushly landscaped mountain glade with creeks, hot mineral baths, rustic saunas, walking paths, fire pits, forest treatment decks, and a women’s garden complete with its own mineral bath and sauna. Resort guests and members of Suncadia Club have access to the Swim & Fitness Center in Suncadia Village, which includes indoor waterslides, indoor and outdoor pools, aerobic and strength fitness facilities, and programmed activities such as yoga and pilates.
When completed, Suncadia Village will include gourmet shops and restaurants, boutiques and a wide array of amenities and year-round entertainment for Suncadia residents, visitors and guests. Additional features of Suncadia Village include a 2.3 acre freshwater lake, a boat dock and a fishing peninsula, and a grass and stone amphitheater for outdoor cinema and musical performances in the summertime. The amphitheater converts to an outdoor ice rink in winter months.
Owner’s Perspective
Currently, there are a number of condominiums available for sale in The Lodge, in addition to numerous home sites and custom homes available for sale throughout Suncadia’s property, including the Prospector neighborhood in and around Prospector Golf Course; Nelson Preserve, a collection of home sites with easy access to the Suncadia Conservancy and its network of trails; and the controlled access, private club community Tumble Creek. To date, more than 1150 properties have been sold in Suncadia, including Suncadia-listed resales.
Around 80 percent of owners are Seattle-area residents who chose Suncadia as their ideal location for a second home, though Suncadia residents also come from as far away as Florida and Hawaii.
Bonnie and Curry Miller are pleased to make Suncadia part of the family’s lifestyle. “Our kids love coming up here and spending time with us,” said Bonnie. “And, at 25 years old it’s not often that your kids want to come spend time with you. They can come up here and go bike riding or fly fishing – or, in the winter, skiing or snowshoeing. It’s been a very good bonding experience for the family and I think that’s what we’re looking for.”
About Suncadia
To date, more than $550 million has been spent on amenities and infrastructure at the community. Suncadia began introducing amenities in 2003, and currently includes 272 luxurious guest rooms and suites, two restaurants offering exceptional Pacific Northwest cuisine, the first destination spa in Washington, two championship golf courses (one private), over 20,000 square feet of conference and event space, numerous
ownership opportunities, festivals and concerts throughout the year, and various recreation facilities and activities. A third golf course, Rope Rider, named for the site’s former coal miners who rode coal cars pulled by underground cables, is under construction.

Located in the heart of Suncadia is Suncadia Village, which includes such amenities as the intimate 18-room Inn at Suncadia; the 254-room Lodge at Suncadia overlooking the Cle Elum River; Suncadia Club Swim & Fitness center with water slides, pools, exercise room and activities such as yoga and pilates; Glade Spring Spa; a seasonal ice skating rink and amphitheater. The resort community also features 50 miles of planned multiuse trails. When completed, the resort community will include over 3,000 residential units ranging from
condos to homes and will be twice the size of Sunriver in Oregon. When complete, Suncadia Village will also include a mix of boutique shopping and additional amenities. For more information, please visit www.suncadia.com.
Suncadia is owned by subsidiaries of JELDWEN inc., PacTrust and Lowe Enterprises, Inc., and is operated by Destination Hotels & Resorts a subsidiary of Lowe Enterprises, Inc.
