Layne Fast Tracks Surf Novices

SURFING superstar Layne Beachley dropped in to Burleigh yesterday to lend her expertise to a group of novices.

The seven-time world women’s surfing champion was on hand at the famous Gold Coast surf beach to put a group of Wyndham Vacation Resort owners, and some of their children, through their paces in a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

And while Burleigh’s, at times, ominous break failed to perform, Beachley said conditions were good for learning.

“Everyone’s enthusiastic but unfortunately the surf is really small,” said Beachley, who is a brand ambassador for the resort company.

“It’s perfect for learning.

“A little bit bigger would have been even better.

“I don’t think there are too many surfers in this group.

“A lot of them are surf beginners and I’m hoping they can all float.

“I’m here to give them a once-in-a-lifetime, money-can’t-buy sort of experience.”

While showing a group of 40 beginners how to get started in the sport might be a little daunting for some, Beachley said she had some help in the form of professional coaches.

“I have great coaches on my side,” she said.

“All of the coaches from Surfing Queensland have come down to assist.”

Sydney youngster Blade Ruger was among those to gain the benefit of the former world champion’s experience.

The nine-year-old made the journey to the Gold Coast with his mother and sister, and said he was keen to learn despite never having been surfing.
