Getting The Best From RCI Points
January 26, 2009 by Fractional Property Ownership, Timeshare & Luxury Travel Magazine · Leave a Comment
RCI is well known for being a pioneer in the concept of holiday exchanges for timeshare weeks, but it’s perhaps less known that it was also a pioneer in enabling owners of points to exchange between different timeshare resorts through RCI Points.

The concept of ‘points’, rather than an individual timeshare ‘week’, is a relatively recent concept but has quickly become both well established and popular. For those unfamiliar with the idea, rather than buying a particular week, an owner buys, or is allocated, a set number of points for a recurring 12 month period against a particular week and accommodation type. In the case of RCI Points those can then be used against holidays at your home resort, or against a holiday – or holidays – at any RCI affiliated resort around the world.
Perhaps the big difference between weeks and points is that an owner can see at any time how many points they have available, and with RCI Points how many they need to book a particular season and size of accommodation. RCI Points also have a two year life span, so there are a number of opportunities to really make the most of membership.
If you have RCI Points left over after making a booking then these are automatically carried forward into the following year. It is possible to choose not to make a booking and save all your RCI Points into the following year, but there is a small charge for this.
Why would you want to do this? Well, it is possible to combine RCI Points from different years to use against a holiday with a higher RCI Points value than perhaps your single year’s value. So, if you find your dream holiday, you can use your current year’s RCI Points and borrow from your following year’s allocation in order to make up the total amount needed. It really is very flexible. And it is even possible to transfer RCI Points to friends and family, even if they are not RCI members, using a low cost Guest Certificate. The only thing to remember is that RCI Points expire if they are not used within two years of the relevant use year, and management fees are payable in the normal way (usually against the allocated week and accommodation type).
RCI provides a range of benefits to help members get the most from their RCI Points membership. This includes a brochure detailing resorts all round the world and their respective RCI Points values. In the same way as with weeks, RCI Points values vary according to a number of different factors, including the location of a resort, its quality and amenities, the configuration of the home accommodation type and the time of year. Travel and other services can also be booked easily, making it extremely simple to organise a holiday. To keep up to date with your RCI Points balance, regular statements are sent so you can see exactly how many points you have used and how many are available to use. Booking a holiday with RCI is stressfree and straightforward. A quick phone call to RCI’s friendly guides will allow you to check availability and make the holiday arrangements you want. In addition, the RCI website – rci.com – allows points owners to view their RCI Points balance, check availability and make holiday bookings online.
RCI Points members also have other RCI benefits which include the Holiday magazine, featuring travel articles and holiday ideas, and Extra Holidays, which allow members to access a range of holidays around the world at specially negotiated prices. And, as always, RCI is continually enhancing its member benefits. Recent developments have included the regular promotion of specially discounted holidays, reducing the
number of RCI Points needed for a particular holiday. In addition, improvements to the rci.com website are making searching much easier, and members across Europe receive their information and offers in their local language. And there’s still a lot more to come.
RCI Points really are a flexible and modern way to explore the timeshare exchange holiday world.
