Welcome to Jackson Hole, Wyoming USA - a remarkable place that includes all those ingredients and then some. Jackson Hole is a valley located in west-central Wyoming, and gets the name “hole” from early trappers or mountain men, who primarily entered the valley from the north and east and had to descend into the valley along relatively steep slopes, giving the sensation of entering a hole. These low-lying valleys surrounded by mountains contain rivers and streams that are good habitat for various fur-bearing animals.

The valley is formed by the Teton Range on the western side and the Gros Ventre range on the eastern side. Grand Teton National Park occupies the north-western part of the valley encompassing the much of the Teton Range as well as Jackson Lake. The average altitude of the valley is over 6,500 feet (2,000 m).

The price of quality real estate in Jackson Hole has skyrocketed over the past decade due to the limited amount of developable land. Each summer nearly 300 musicians from the nation’s top ensembles journey here to perform seven weeks of orchestra and chamber music concerts in Walk Festival Hall literally next door to the Teton Club.

Internationally acclaimed conductor Donald Runnicles leads this great American festival that regularly features a star-studded cast of guest soloists. Family concerts and eclectic offerings of big band and jazz round out the summer schedule. The small venue of Walk Festival Hall holds only 700 people in amphitheater-style seating, offering a uniquely intimate concert experience that is right in line with the casual, outdoorsy feel of the Festival.

Other venues for live music include the legendary Mangy Moose Saloon playing rock, bluegrass, reggae and even some 80’s tunes. For country and western, there’s the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar on the town square. Get dressed up and dance Western Swing or just watch the locals.

The Wild West – The Old West is still alive here. From the Wild West shoot-outs on the town square to the Rodeo where you can experience cowboy competition will bull riding, team roping, and barrel racing. When you walk on the wooden sidewalks around the elk-antler arches of the town square it makes you feel like you’re a part of the Old West. If you get adventurous, you can climb aboard the old stagecoach for a horse drawn ride around the town square.

 – Eat like cowboys and see a great show.Shows vary from musical and funny to reenactments complete with cowboys and Indians. As popular as summer time for summer residents, winter season activities have probably put Jackson Hole on the map.

Skiing - The Jackson Hole Mountain Resort is rated one of the best ski mountains in the world. Its lifts and gondola service 2,500 acres of skiing on two neighboring mountains and an additional 3,000 acres of unpatrolled backcountry terrain. 10% of Jackson’s terrain is beginner, 40% intermediate and 50% expert. There are 22 miles of groomed trails, the longest of which is a 7.2-mile traverse of mixed terrain from the 10,450-foot summit of Rendezvous Mountain. The 111 “official” trails include bowls, couloirs, wide-open
groomers, trees, and mellow faces. Just as many unofficial trails wind their way down the mountain.

Snowmobiling adventures is all about fun in the rugged and beautiful backcountry of the Grand Teton and Yellowstone areas. Surrounded on all sides by some of the west’s most spectacular mountain ranges,

Discovered by the Portuguese in 1460 by Antonio Da Noli, a Genoan merchant, working as a Portuguese explorer. Inhabited by Europeans and Africans, there are ten islands that make up the Cape Verde Archipelago all of which vary in terms of size, landscape and activities. The islands all have their own characters, some volcanic and mountainous, others flat and sandy. The northern group includes Santo Antao, Sao Vicente, Santa Lucia and San Nicolao. To the west are the sandy islands of Sal and Boa Vista, and to the south is Brava with its abundance of flora, the volcanic Fogo, beautiful white sandy beaches of Maio
and finally the largest island of Santiago with its white sandy coves and mountainous interior. The capital Praia can be found on the south coast of Santiago.

The Cape Verdean population is a mixture of different cultures and races with the main language spoken being Creole (a variety of the Portuguese language). The Islands have about 450,000 inhabitants with 236,000 of these living on the main island Santiago. The Cape Verdean people are a mixture of many different ethnic groups and in the past the colonial government had tried again and again to avoid the formation of a mixed population. Nevertheless there were always big landowners with influence, organs of the state and even priests in high positions who lived together with female slaves which showed their opposition and at the same time created a Creole culture. Also the Jesuits committed themselves strongly to the concept of equality, by opening schools for free people and slaves, for white and colored people at
the same time. They also allowed the slaves to attend the masses.

Even today you can see the genetic mixture resulting from the migration of the people for many centuries: more than once you will meet people with dark skin, blond hair and blue eyes or children with fair skin and black hair. Racist discrimination is unknown to the Cape Verdean people.

Now with new ease of travel from low cost airlines to Cape Verde, the previously undiscovered islands are an exciting new destination for the European market. With the islands glorious sandy beaches, warm seas and temperate annual climate, the islands are being dubbed as the new Seychelles or Caribbean and recommended as one of the best places to buy in the sun.

Santo Antao is a beautiful lush green island with rugged peaks and deep valleys and is the second largest island in the archipelago. Many people are attracted to this island for its hiking. For those who prefer the less energetic option, you can still appreciate the stunning views with spectacular drives along coastal roads which provide access to the ravines and gorges that nurture impressive and lush vegetation. From here you can also vist the uninhabited island of St Luzia.

Santiago is the most African of all the islands and is also the largest in the archipelago. It was the first to be populated after its discovery by the Portuguese in 1462 and is the most densely populated today, with most of its inhabitants living in Praia, the capital of Cape Verde.

This island has a spectacular mountainous interior with two large mountain chains, the highest point being
Pico d’Antonia at 1392m. The coastline has numerous sandy beaches, the best being at Sao Francisco, where the Sambala Village development is being built another is Tarrafal, 80 kilometers to the north. The island is a mixture of beautiful landscapes, rural villages, lively markets and palm fringed beaches. The capital city of Praia is a small but rather sophisticated community just coming into its own offering lively nightlife.

Sao Nicolau is one of the Barlavento islands of Cape Verde. It is located between the major islands of San Vicente and Sal. Its population is 13,536 and the land area is 388 km/sq. The mountainous island is mostly agricultural but has been subject to droughts in the past. The flat areas and hills dominate most of the coastline and the central part. A peninsula covers the eastern area of the island and the highest point is Monte Gordo rising to 1312 m. Sao Nicolau is renowned for its Blue Marlin fishing, which is some of the best in the world and obviously its great weather.

If you’re looking for a holiday destination of a lifetime you can’t go wrong with a trip to Egypt. Some of the greatest wonders of the world and at a price that’s hard to believe. The euro is worth approximately 8 Egyptian pounds!

The Marriott Taba Heights Hotel Resort is only 86 euros per night with a full breakfast and a beachfront suite overlooking the Red sea and the Gulf of Aqaba. When we awoke at 6am in the morning we could see the twinkling lights of the Saudi Arabian coast across the gulf. Even though our visit was the early part of January we were able to sunbathe on the beach outside our door! As with any international travel, safety is a major concern but in all fairness I felt safer in Egypt than here at my new home in Las Vegas NV. USA!

Egypt had long been at the top of my bucket list (The list of everything I wish to do before I kick the bucket!) But not in my wildest dreams did I imagine that I would have the opportunity to visit Cairo, The Pyramids, The Lost city of Petra in Jordon, and the amazing Monastery at St. Catherin’s in the heart of the Sinai Desert and all in 7 days!

Our trip was a last minute decision whilst visiting London England and finding we had a week to kill, so to speak; I spotted an advertisement for a company called Peltours (www.Peltours.com) who have been providing tours to Egypt since 1920. They arranged both our flight and accommodation at an amazing price, which included half board. They also organized all our trips to Cairo, Jordon and the Sinai Monastery where you can still see and touch the burning bush where Moses is said to have spoken to God, at the foot of the mountain where he received the Stone Tablets! (The highlight of my trip by the way!)

Our 5-hour flight from London was uneventful and we arrived to a hearty welcome provided in part by the Egyptian Tourist Security Police who did everything possible to make our welcome both smooth and comforting. A short coach trip accompanied by our tour company guide brought us to the resort area of Taba Heights and our superb Marriott Taba Heights Resort.

We were registered in no time and soon set out to discover our home for the next 7 days. The gardens were in full bloom and the swimming pool that seemed to go in all directions was already full of British tourists who were obviously pleased to get away from England’s chilly winter. The Resort boasted a full range of services including a great Gym and Spa; A Bank with 24 hour ATM facilities, great gift shops and a wide assortment of restaurants.

Our favorite turned out to be The Grotto, a cave like facility at which the resort offered themed dinners with extensive cabaret for only about 30 euros per head. We picked the Bedouin night and had a wonderful time. We chose day trips, preferring to return to our beautiful suite at The Marriott each evening.

Our first excursion was to Cairo and the Pyramids. This is a rather tiring 5-hour drive from Taba. A private car and driver for the day cost only 123 euros. We left at 5 am and arrived at the Pyramids by 10 am – plenty of time to see all there is to see at this wonder of the world and still spend a few hours at the Cairo Museum – a must on any visit.

For a small fee you can enter the Pyramids and visit the amazing Cheops Solar Barge discovered at the base of the Pyramid of Cheops. It has taken 14 years to reconstruct! Our second excursion was to the country of Jordan, about a 2-hour cruise from our Taba location. If you saw Indiana Jones “Last Crusade” you would immediately recognize the ‘Lost City of Petra’. Little is known about the Nabatean people or their Capital which looks so much like a mysterious stage set in the middle of this multicolored sandstone mountain range and dating back to 1500 BC. It all came to an amazing end when on the 19th of May, 363 AD an Earthquake razed part of the city and brought about the eventual de-population of Petra.

Be warned…what they omit to tell you is that there is an approximate 5 km walk from the entrance to the ‘lost city’! For the trip back we took a horse and cart for what seemed an expensive 25 euros! Nevertheless a visit never to be forgotten! On the trip back from Petra we stopped for a short shopping visit to Aqaba.

Our Bedouin Night at the Marriott’s Grotto was full of surprises. After we had been clothed in the conventional Bedouin robes we were made comfortable on our pile of cushions on the floor in true native style. The cabaret was magnificent with non-stop dance groups and solo artists including a very beautiful ‘belly dancer’. The highlight was the lamb served on a bed of cuscus on our own miniature BBQ at our small round table. The food throughout our 7-day stay was first class wherever we were taken to dine. We had no language difficulties and everyone went truly out of their way to make our stay as pleasant as possible. The local chemist provided almost any drug without prescription and at an unbelievable price! Without question, for your author at least, the final day’s visit to the amazing Monastery of St. Catherine was the highlight of the 7-day trip.

As we drove in our comfortable airconditioned coach across the Sinai Desert to the foot of Mt. Horeb (Where Moses received the stone tablets of Biblical fame) we had the opportunity to meet up with the local Bedouin people who make their home on the desert and sell their wares to the visiting tourists at road side stops along the way. On our return we encountered two of their children at an Oasis and found them to be just delightful. They eagerly accepted the apples and sandwiches we provided from our packed lunch and were thrilled to pose for pictures. We knew not from whenst they came or went as we drove of into the distance.

The Monastery is a walled fortress accessible through a tiny doorway leading to the square where Moses’ burning bush is still continuing to bloom to this day! The Greek Monks, who have inhabited this site since the 9th century, are keepers of the world’s largest collection of religious icons and precious manuscripts.

You can visit Skull House containing the skeletal remains of deceased monks. Thousands of human skulls piled unceremonially behind chicken wire for all to view. The museum displaying the religious icons was dazzling and made the journey more than worth whilst. We stopped at the Hilton Hotel at Nuwibaa for a buffet lunch and viewed the stretch of the Red Sea where Moses is said to have parted the waters, and from where fossilized remains of Chariot wheels and bones have been recovered.

We decided very early on in our visit to purchase all our souvenirs from one of the two gift shops at the hotel. Our bulk purchase earned us a much greater discount than we would have achieved buying the gifts one at a time elsewhere. I returned with a designer set of luggage that I purchased for 150 euros!

Last year some 23 million tourists soaked up the sun on Turkey’s world-famous beaches, energising its economy and making it one of the top holiday destinations anywhere in the world. This year, the Turkish Hotel Federation (TUROFED) expects the number of visitors to
increase by a cool four million. It’s a summer love affair that shows no signs of cooling - Turkey is now hot on Spain’s heels in the holiday hotpspot rankings.

Although Turkey plans to enter the Eurozone, Turkey’s lira is still the local currency, which is good news for British visitors. Prices are still low compared to other parts of Europe, and the recent “pound-versus-euro” see-saw makes Turkey twice as appealing to British holidaymakers looking for a new way to stretch their pounds this summer - without having to fork out for a transatlantic flight.

Turkish developers have, in the main, been careful not to over-develop their precious coastline and the south west coast, with its much-photographed pine-clad mountains, olive groves and uncrowded beaches, is refreshingly under-developed compared to many of the Spanish Costas.

Antalya, Marmaris and Bodrum are among Turkey’s most popular tourist spots, all conveniently close to airports. Small but perfectly formed, Bodrum is an idyllic spot even in winter, with its very own picture postcard landmark, the romantic 16th century Castle of St. Peter. When the holidaymakers have left, Bodrum’s cafés serve Turkish coffee (türk kahvesi) to the villagers, the sunbeds are stored away, and the boardwalks of chic beach clubs lie empty until the new season.

In summer it’s a different story: Bodrum’s population swells from 50,000 to almost half a million and its quiet harbour becomes a temporary home to yachts and have-yachts. Bodrum changes in true chameleon-style from quiet fishing village to Cannes meets Ibiza, when the entire peninsula comes here to party. Sting, Tom Hanks and Shakira are among those who love the low key glamour of the place – here they can escape the paparazzi – a rare luxury - and soak up the Turkish sun at the pool of a million euro villa or on the deck of a private yacht.

One of Bodrum’s hoteliers remembers a jaw-dropping James Bond moment when Octopus, the 414-ft super yacht owned by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, pulled into Bodrum harbour – a sort of Alice In Wonderland vision for those who watched while the mega-yacht, complete with two helicopters on its top deck, made smaller yachts look like anchovies.

One European resort developer that plans to expand into Turkey is Club La Costa Resorts & Hotels. Soon Club La Costa members will be able to stay at a brand new resort, the Adonis Private Residences & Club, for the very first time.

As with all of CLC’s resorts, prime location and optimal onsite amenities are prerequisites. Bodrum doubles as a destination for both beach-lovers and culture vultures: the surrounding area is rich in historic interest – no less than two of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, The Temple of Artemis in Epheseus and the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus in Bodrum, are nearby. Bodrum itself is remarkably well preserved and those with wheels can take the main road leading out of town to the Greco-Roman amphitheatre that doubles as an open air live music venue.

Such is member demand for Turkish destinations that as well as the Adonis resort, Club La Costa has just announced its new summer 2009 Yacht Club destination will be the Aegean Coast, not far from the Adonis resort. Baños, situated in a valley of waterfalls and hot springs, has become a Mecca for international travellers seeking year-round temperate weather. It is a small town in the valley of Tungurahua Volcano also known as “Throat of Fire “ which is the largest volcano in Ecuador yet the most easily climbed since Baños is already set on the hillside. Conservation
The valley of the Rio Pastaza between Baños and Puyo is an internationally recognized biodiversity hotspot. It contains at least 500 species of birds, hundreds of orchid species including many new to science, and large mammals such as the endangered Mountain Tapir and Spectacled Bear. The number of plant species unique to this area is greater than the number of plant species endemic to the famous Galapagos Islands!

The owners of Luna Runtun are helping to protect this biodiversity by establishing nature reserves in these different habitats, and by helping local forest owners to make a sustainable living without cutting their forests. They have created the San Antonio Cloud Forest Reserve at the base of Tungurahua, where Mountain Tapir and Spectacled Bear are found with some regularity. This area is rich in high-elevation forest birds including the rare White-rimmed Brush Finch, resident Peregrine Falcons and many striking tanagers
like the Golden-crowned Tanager. It was going to be sold to wood cutters when Luna Runtun stepped in to save it.

The owners of Luna Runtun also have established a foothill forest reserve at lower elevations near Mera, protecting a completely different set of birds, plants, and animals. This area has many Amazonian birds like the gaudy Paradise Tanager, and mammals such as the tayra and coati. The Mera area is a center of plant endemism with about 50 unique species found nowhere else, so it is an important area for conservation.

Between these two reserves, Luna Runtun works with a private landowner whose forest hosts the noisy group mating display of one of the most spectacular Andean birds, the glowing orange-red Cock-of-the-Rock. This community support is very important, since the ecotourism visits arranged through Luna Runtun can provide a way for this landowner to live without cutting down his forest. In Ecuador there are many species of plants, insects, frogs, and other things with small ranges that fall outside the officially protected national park system.

The only way to preserve these species is by creating a mosaic of small, privately owned reserves strategically located in the gaps between the national parks. Luna Runtun is making this idea a reality in the Upper Pastaza watershed and making a real difference in the fight for conservation of some of the world’s most diverse species and environments.

July to September 2007
Scotland saw the best hotel performance of the three countries in the United Kingdom with revPAR growth across the country of 8.9%. Aberdeen had the highest growth of any UK city, with revPAR increasing 18.6%. Glasgow also achieved revPAR growth of 13.1%. (HotelBenchmark Survey, Deloitte, November 2007). Scotland delivers the highest Average Room Rate and RevPar figures in the UK outside London- year after year. Scotland’s average occupancy rates, average room rates and RevPar show the largest uplift across the UK much of this is due to the increase of International visits.
