A little goes a long way…

Timeshare resorts are sometimes seen as being large developments, but there are many smaller resorts where the focus is on high levels of quality and service for owners and guests alike. Owners Perspectives takes a look at one such resort, Sol Amadores on Gran Canaria, which may be small but has it all.

Sol Amadores is situated on the south coast of Gran Canaria, a short drive from the wellknown resort of Puerto Rico. The resort has achieved RCI Gold Crown status, and yet it has just 38 apartments.
The island’s Puerto Calma Group, the RCI affiliated developer of Sol Amadores, has a philosophy of creating small developments which are rich in quality, services and accommodation. The Group’s resorts are also serviced by its own maintenance arm, which ensures consistent standards and service.
The Puerto Calma Group believes in placing the emphasis on the creation of a sense of community and a home from home, where guests are treated as friends and the staff are always willing to help with advice and organising any services that may be required. Francisco Iniesta, the group’s general manager, said: “It isn’t unusual for our resort staff to have a decade or more of service with us and they know all our regular guests. Nothing is too much trouble for our guest-facing staff. Typically they will organise golf, spa treatments
and even shop for guests before they arrive to make sure they have all their favourite foods awaiting their arrival. We even have staff who go out every morning to, say, a German bakery to ensure our German visitors can enjoy their preferred bread while on holiday. Some staff even play golf with our male golfing contingent whose wives prefer to go shopping or relax by the pool rather than accompany their men around the greens all day!
“Offering a personal service that is second to none is our prime focus. But it has become more than that. Our guests are looked upon by everyone at our resorts as friends and family and we treat them as we would our own.”
Every Tuesday the Puerto Calma resort management host a welcome party with free drinks, a buffet and music.
There are no sales messages at these parties – they are all about fun, enjoyment and socialising.
The Group is headed by the Roca family and has five resorts, all following the same philosophy, but all with their own distinctive style and character. The other four resorts are Puerto Calma, Vista Amadores, Jardin de Amadores and Playa Amadores. All are located either in Puerto Rico or close to the Amadores Beach.
Sol Amadores is its most recent development, opening in 2006. The resort has been built in a natural amphitheatre, tucked into the hillside overlooking the sea, and the architects took their inspiration from the views to create large terraces and fresh open and natural apartment interiors. The one- and twobedroom apartments combine high-quality furnishings and natural materials with a modern yet cool and relaxed feel. They all have fully equipped kitchens, bathrooms and good sized accommodation, along with air conditioning. Many of the apartments have private balconies with their own spa tub, so you can relax while enjoying the view!

The high quality of the accommodation is complemented by the resort facilities. These include a heated pool, a sauna, gym and snack bar, mini-market, as well as mini-golf, petanque, outdoor chess and a children’s play area.
If you can tear yourself away from the resort, then it is only a short distance to the beach at Amadores, where there is a range of water sports available, with water skiing and scuba diving close by. The resort itself has agreements with a neighbouring 18-hole golf course and a spa centre which secure preferential rates and access to these amenities for its guests.
The location of the resort – slightly inland, and a reasonable drive of just over 30 miles from Las Palmas – means that a car is recommended for a stay at the resort. The resort is ideally situated to get out and explore the many attractions of this very individual Canary Island. The busy bustle of Puerto Rico is a short drive away, and it is also easy to explore further afield and discover the many traditional villages, and the spectacular countryside.
